... much struck by excessive mortality arising from the pestilence which occurred in the autumn of 1610 and spring 1611. Do not know the exact population of this parish at that time but in the year 1801 it was only 121, we may conclude that it did not exceed 80. The 10 years previous to 1610 the total number of burials in the parish was 11. In the period 5th September and 2nd December there were 24 whereby 22 died of the pestilence.

It would appear that in April, 1611 the plague broke out again and 3 persons of the family CORNWALL were buried within 18 days. In 1610 more than one fourth of the population was cut off in 80 days.

An Indenture made 1703 [D1278/T12 - GRO]relates to a Marriage Settlement but gives some idea of the lands William owned/leased. His Will was made around 1/3/1670 and the indenture relates to property bequeathed to his nephew John SURMAN.
Lands/Names mentioned:- Close of pasture ground in Southwick, Tewkesbury known as Rudge Croft (3 acres), together with ground in Southwick known as Little Meadows (3 acres). Ground lying between the said two closes being a usual way for carts and carriages leading to common meadow called Glassemore in Southwick. All which premises have the highway leading from Tredington to Tewkesbury on the west side, land of said William Surman deceased on the east side, which premises were purchased by William from Joseph BICK and Margaret his wife and Thomas BICK, son and heir of Charles BICK and brother of said Joseph BICK. Glassemore meadow (1/2 an acre) - purchased from Richard YOUNGER, the elder and Richard YOUNGER the younger son and heir apparent. One parcel of arable land with appertements (2 acres) upon part whereof a windmill stood, the highway is from Tewkesbury to Gloucester and is situated in Walton in parish of Deerhurst, in or near a place called the Windmill Hill or the Howe. Land now of Charles HANCOX, Esq., called the Cufsey purchased from James HARDING and Mary his wife. 2 leyes of pasture in ground called Long Dean having the land of Christopher GUY, Esq and William SURMAN on the north east side and land of Thomas NORRIS, Gent and said William on the south west side. Land known as Glassemore Shard purchased from Thomas BICK the ygr, Elizabeth his wife and Katherine BICK.
