The
Society was founded in 1996 following many years of correspondence
between people researching the surname. The majority of our early
ancestors could not read or write, therefore it was left to the
cleric to spell the surname, hence the many variations from SERMAN
through to SURMON.
Our newsletter, entitled The Pulpit, is published twice a year; we
welcome articles, snippets, photos, etc. for inclusion. The AGM's
are held in various locations in the UK and the afternoon is usually
spent touring a village with 'family' connections.
We have held four Family Gatherings, the first in Tewkesbury in
1996, where the Society was founded, the second in Worcestershire in
2000 to commemerate the Millennium, another in 2005 at Witney,
Oxfordshire and this year's in Grass Valley, Fremantle, Western
Australia.
We do not hold regular
meetings as our Members are widespread but we interact with one
another by phone, e-mail or letter.
Research is carried out free of charge to paid up Members of the
Society with a small charge to cover cost of printing and postage,
however, there is a fee to non-members to cover research time plus
expenses.
